Southwark leader blasts Prime Minister Theresa May over Ledbury comments

October 6, 2017

Taking to his seemingly favoured medium of Twitter once again, Southwark Council leader Peter John vented his frustrations directly at Prime Minister Theresa May after she made comments on Ledbury Estate during a BBC Radio 4 programme on 3rd October.

Mrs May, being interviewed on Grenfell spoke of a 'thread' of information coming to light where social housing tenants are not being listened to, mentioning the cracks at Ledbury as one example. She also spoke of Alok Sharma; the minister for Housing & Planning and his plans to travel around the UK to sit down with social housing tenants and hear their concerns.

Peter John furiously responded to the Prime Minister:

The council leader extended an invitation to Mrs May to visit Southwark to find out the 'true story' on Ledbury, as well as criticising successive governments and their failings over large panel system builds. What's not clear is Peter John's position of accepting any responsibility on a local council level over the towers at Ledbury, which Southwark have owned for over 35 years.

Ledbury Estate residents themselves would welcome visits from all politicians, including Peter John, to hear the 'true story' from the residents on the ground.

Our own invitation comes with a view to seeing the parties come together to solve the issues at Ledbury, as well as open a wider debate to resolve issues with social housing nationwide on a legislative level. The issues at Ledbury appear to be being used currently as a political football, which does not in any way benefit the residents.
